AWARD WINNING SKYLGHTS
the Columbia difference
BUILT CANADIAN TOUGH
- As a Canadian company, we know our skylights have to withstand one of the toughest climates on the planet. With our limited daylight in the winter and extremes of hot and cold, snow, rain, wind, and hail – northerners need more natural light to make their home comfortable and healthy.
- Improving the comfort and livability of our homes, while protecting them from the impact of extreme weather has always been central to Columbia’s mission.
- Since 1955 Columbia Skylights has been manufacturing skylights in Canada to meet the demands of the Canadian climate. With six decades of satisfied customers across North America, on over a million homes – we are proud to be Canada’s leading skylight manufacturer.
- Columbia skylights are manufactured in our Canadian plant in Burnaby, British Columbia, and distributed to central and the east coast from our Mississauga warehouse. We employ a highly skilled Canadian workforce, many of whom have been with us for decades, and 95% of our raw materials are produced in Canada and the USA.

- Based on decades of experience, Columbia has developed a leakproof system second to none.
- By incorporating the latest manufacturing processes, materials and parts, a modern skylight will not leak, unless is is damaged or improperly installed.
- Columbia utilizes a unique frame design – incorporating an external extruded aluminum frame with an internal PVC or Aluminum frame.
- Columbia recommends the use of a ‘wet’ seal – butyl tape or caulking to adhere the internal skylight frame to the wood curb. It creates an air and warmth bond that does not allow moisture or cold air to penetrate.
- Condensation is common in Canadian homes because of the difference between the exterior and the interior temperature, and the humidity caused by normal daily activities such as bathing, cooking, exercising, and plants. The humidity collects on hard surfaces in the house, such as windows and skylight glass.
- Columbia skylights features an internal gutter system to capture any condensation on your internal glass surface. All Columbia skylights incorporate an extra wide rigid internal gutter on 4-sides of the interior frame to wick away moisture. The gutter is part of the internal PVC frame.
- In comparison, many imported skylights utilize a black flexible EPDM rubber gasket with a shallow perimeter ledge, frequently on just one of four sides. This system can fail when subjected to continuous cold temperatures and condensation build up.
- Our skylights are the right choice because they eliminate the problem of lightwell staining caused by excess condensation.
- Columbia stands behind the skylights it makes, and it is this commitment to customer satisfaction is why we have been in business since 1955.
- We offer the best warranty in the business because we believe that when a customer selects one of our products they should rest assured that it will perform for years to come.
Glass: The sealed glass unit will not fail for a period of twenty years from the date of purchase (condensation between glass).

- After more than five decades of manufacturing skylights, Columbia can confidently state that curb mounted skylights provide the best long term skylight installation and the choice of leading roofing professionals.
- Curb Mount provides the installer with the flexibility to adapt the installation to the requirements of your architect, contractor or roof structure.
- Curb Mount is the industry preferred installation method across North America.
- IKO, one of the leading roof shingle manufacturers in North America states:“Curb mounted skylights are a superior choice to prevent leaks. They allow for more flexibility in size and can offer more glass area than a deck mounted skylight placed in the same hole. Curbs can be built on site or can be provided by the skylight manufacturer. In either case, a curb should be double walled and insulated to help retain heat in the home.”
